1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Program Information

The concept is simple; the rewards are priceless. Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler. The goal is to have read 1,000 books (yes, you can repeat books) before your precious one starts kindergarten. As children progress through books, they are able to visit the library to earn prizes and books for every 100 books read.

Sign Up Process

Benefits

This program offers numerous benefits, including improved language development, increased vocabulary, and enhanced literacy skills, all of which can contribute to a child's overall readiness for school. Additionally, the program promotes a love of reading and strengthens the bond between parent and child through shared reading experiences. The five key benefits are:

1. Early Literacy Skills:

  • Reading aloud to young children builds foundational literacy skills, including phonological awareness, vocabulary, and print awareness.

  • This early exposure to language and stories helps children develop a strong foundation for reading later on.

  • The program can help children develop a larger vocabulary, making them better prepared for school.

2. Language and Cognitive Development:

  • Hearing stories and engaging in conversations around books stimulates brain development and enhances language skills.

  • Reading aloud provides opportunities for children to learn new words, understand grammar, and develop their listening skills.

  • The program can also help children develop their imagination and creativity.

3. Bonding and Social-Emotional Development:

  • Shared reading time creates a strong bond between parent and child.

  • Reading aloud provides a positive and nurturing experience that can boost a child's self-esteem and confidence.

  • The program can also promote social skills, such as turn-taking, listening, and sharing.

4. School Readiness:

  • Children who are read to regularly tend to have a larger vocabulary and better language skills when they enter school.

  • This early literacy experience can set children up for success in their academic careers.

5. Love of Reading:

  • The program fosters a love of reading and a lifelong appreciation for literature.

  • This can lead to a child's desire to read independently and explore different genres and authors.
